Rule Numero Uno of Design

What is rule numero uno of design you ask? It’s being yourself! Contrary to the vibes I’m giving off, this isn’t a cheesy PSA. However, it is the single most important factor to consider when styling your home.

Your home should make you feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders every time you walk through that front door. And you may be unaware of this now, but your home should give you that warm fuzzy feeling no other place… or perhaps even no other person can give you. Your home should anticipate your every move, it should support you, and it should inspire you.

How can a home do all of this? And more importantly, how can you date this home? All jokes aside, the answer is as easy as good design and the best place to start is by figuring out just what kind of guy you are. If you need a little help stereotyping yourself, allow me to introduce you to this article from Esquire,  "The 12 Styles of American Man: Which One are You?”

I took the liberty of selecting some of my favorite styles mentioned in the article and listing them below with some helpful descriptions and photos of rooms that brilliantly showcase each of them. Regardless of which type of guy you are, there is endless opportunity to reflect this in your home.  And when it comes down to it, there truly isn’t anything better than coming home to a home that is you!

Style #1: The Powerhouse

This executive is in charge and he’s saying it with luxurious, tufted leather furniture and shiny lacquered or glass coffee tables. Built in bars and humidors, duhhh, what successful negotiation isn’t accompanied by a Johnie Walker Blue and a Cuban? If he lived in Denver, well you’d probably seem him waiting for his private jet at Centennial airport or the Little Nell in Aspen. It’s easier to look like this guy then be this guy… but if he’s your spirit animal, I am here to help.

Style #2 The Professional

This guy has a well paying, 9-5 job. He’s proud of his hard work but won’t be showing it off in any flashy ways. His home is casual and comfortable. His style is reflected in his simple, neutral upholstered sofa with a colored throw pillow or two and an understated coffee table. If he lived in Denver you would find him at INK coffee before work and happy hour at Linger.

Style #3: The Woodsman

This guy is often a little rough around the edges and loves the outdoors. His closet is filled with flannels and you’ll find him fishing or hunting on the weekends. This design scheme has a heritage feel with warm toned leathers and plaid accents. Dark woods and metal furniture with rustic elements, think antler light fixtures and a stack of wood by the fireplace. This style has a close cousin that may or may not be hipster in nature (yay beards). If he lived in Denver you would find him at Buckhorn Exchange or if he’s the latter, hipster version at Forest Room Five.

Style # 4 The Minimalist

This guy’s favorite color is black or gray. He'll be dressed in a black suit or maybe on the other spectrum- he’s a trendsetting streetwear fanatic, wearing a longline black hoodie and a fresh pair of black Adidas to match. His contemporary style is represented by his clean lined, sleek furniture, in you guessed it, black, white, or grey. The only color you’ll find in his home is his green indoor plant. If this guy lived in Denver you would find him grabbing a bite at Uncle or Sushi Hai before catching an electronic show.
