Ultra Violet - The Pantone Color of the Year

Every year Pantone declares a color of the year. The color of 2018, you ask? Ultra Violet… yes, that’s a fancy way of saying purple.

For those of you who don’t know, Pantone is basically the authority on color. Then within Pantone lies the Pantone Color Institute. These guys predict global color trends and make the big bucks color consulting for all sorts of companies. The Pantone color of the year is meant to guide the design industry and set the standards for which color and color schemes are trending.

Leatrice Eiseman , the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute dibs Ultraviolet to be a color “that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.” That’s quite an ambitious expectation for a color but I dig it.

With all of that being said, I don’t know if I’m ready to jump aboard the Ultra Violet bandwagon. While many of the color palettes prove to be intriguing and can be used for Airbnb properties I design, the use of purple for my other clientele, men, can only be used sparingly, if at all.

In my exploration of purple for masculine spaces, I was only able to dig up a tiny sampling of examples that may work for the right guy. Overall though, I must say that Ultraviolet for men’s spaces will be a no-go unless you take in to consideration this somewhat comical situation I encountered the other week.

I was helping a friend design his place and he wanted some recommendations on a great vacuum to purchase.  I don’t get excited about a lot of products but my vacuum gets me real riled up, in the best way of course.

Dyson Animal aka Best Vacuum in all of the Land

Dyson Animal aka Best Vacuum in all of the Land

Enter the Dyson Animal Cord-free Vacuum. This baby is compact, light, and has the suction of a beast. Every time I empty this sucker, I am both impressed and overwhelmingly satisfied by the amount of dirt, dust, pet hair, etc. etc. that it picks up.  It is without a doubt one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. So naturally, I let my friend know that this is the only vacuum he is allowed to purchase, no if’s, and’s or but’s.

What’s the catch? Well… the vacuum happens to be purple. My friend asks, “should I get over not liking the idea of a purple vacuum and just buy it?” The answer was obviously ABSOLUTELY, YES. And then in that moment, I remember HEY! the color of the year just happens to be purple and if you want to be on trend this is exactly the vacuum you need. Forget how awesome it is, the fact that it’s Ultraviolet is reason enough to buy it.

All joking aside, I’m afraid that my conclusion on Ultraviolet is that it’s best utilized by purchasing a Dyson Animal (at least when we're talking about men). Let’s hope that 2019 brings a more versatile color!
