Twas’ the beginning of quarantine and amidst all of the time at home, I convinced myself we needed a new rug. Down the rabbit hole I went, spending hours a day searching every nook and cranny of the internet trying to find the perfect one.

While I was deep in my rug search, around me it seemed like the world was coming to an end. The pandemic was in full force, the country was in lockdown, and the economy had definitely seen better days. In this moment, I realized perhaps it wasn’t the best time for a new rug after all. Many shopping carts lay sadly abandoned but don’t worry friends, not all was lost. In my crazy search I had discovered something very special and that very special thing is boucherouite rugs!

These amazing rugs have been hand loomed by village women in Moroccan Berber tribes since the middle of the 20th century. Using recycled “scraps” of cotton, wool or nylon from old carpets, clothing, or even packaging material, they weave together intricate rugs boasting bright colors and beautiful designs. Cherry on top? These works of art are durable and sustainable due to their recycled nature.

Not in the market for a new rug? Well you’re in luck, they make the perfect wall hanging or look amazing as a quilt at the foot of a bed. These rugs work seamlessly in boho, midcentury modern, eclectic, or contemporary spaces.

All that’s left is to figure out where you can buy one. Etsy is the best option in my opinion. You can buy an authentic Berber rug straight from Morocco and score some great vintage finds. The craftsmanship and authenticity can’t be matched. You can also find shag style rugs that mimic the boucherouite style for a steal. They’re not quite like the real thing but can still bring color and character to a space. Check out a few of my favorite picks! I know I can’t wait for the day I get to bring one home!
